The aim of this project was to design an innovative Foaling Alarm which uses modern technologies that ventures into the Internet of Things (IOT) world. The idea is to be able to monitor using an app, one or more mares at a time, who are due to foal at a future point in time, at the comfort of being away from the yard. The aim of the design is to create something marketable for everyone in the Equine Industry. For the prototype, The aim was for the sensors to detect an alarming change and then for it to alert the user. The design concept involved a web server to represent the app in the first instance.
The project included: Sensors, Code, Lycra Hood (for the horse), web server, within an IOT environment. The project involves monitoring humidity and temperature change with the use of sensors and code. The sensor is mounted in the lycra hood, to pick up the sweat which shows the change of temperature and humidity from the mare in labour. The detector then sends a notification to a web server, and the device alerts the user, with sufficient time before the birthing begins.
The project is resulted in a device which alerts the user that there has been a significant increase in temperature and humidity of the horse. A web server is created to represent the app that is to be developed to monitor these changes. A model horse was developed, and a heated pad on the model shows the change in the temperature and humidity, as if the horse was sweating. The lycra hood on the horse is use to hold the device safely out of reach of the horse's mouth or hooves, so that it cannot damage the device. The hood also collect the sweat and holds the increase in temperature using that air space between the horse and sensor. From my own user research and personal experience in this industry and the development in IOT each year, this idea has been welcomed. It is a fast operating and efficient way to monitor mares.
