Irish Conqueror — a Laravel PHP Node.js game

The aim of this project was to develop an online multiplayer trivia game where players can answer questions on Ireland in order to claim the counties of Ireland; whoever claims the most counties wins. The game is played in rounds and players are asked a question with four options to choose from as their answer. Questions are based on Ireland, covering multiple themes from geography to history to entertainment and so on. Users are also able to interact with each other through the chat system implemented in the game, creating new connections and possibly new friends.

Project Description

Irish Conqueror is a web application created using Laravel (an open-source PHP web framework) and Node.js (server-side JavaScript) that allows users to interact with each other and test their knowledge of Ireland.  Three players can compete against each other in order to conquer the most territories in the game. They have to answer questions from different domains as quickly as possible to take the lead in the game. Each player must try to answer correctly as many questions as possible in the shortest amount of time, making the game quite competitive.  The game ends when no territories are left to conquer. The players’ progress is saved in a database so that their progress is never lost. At the end of the game all the players’ scores are added to the games leaderboard.

Project Findings

We might not have achieved everything that we were planning to do but we did improve our programming skills, through working with the Laravel framework, creating Node.js applications and using different types of libraries (express, socket.io, etc.). We faced a few obstacles during the development of this project but we managed to overcome most of them and delivered an application that works to a high standard that we are happy with. With more time and more resources this project would definitely have made it into the game market.
