Satellite tracking device

The aim of this project was to build a unit that could be modified to use readily available data to track objects in space, such as the International Space Station, satellites and planets.

Project Description

I would describe this project as a basic, starter venture into the field of space and astronomy technical instruments. The project as a whole is geared towards users with an interest in the field, and industries alike. The idea of the project was to make a unit that could be the basis for modification, to use readily available, location data of objects is space and subsequently track them. The unit is constructed from acrylic and wood pieces that were laser cut in IADT's digital fabrication lab. The movement of the parts are controlled by two motors; the first of which is a stepper motor that controls the azimuth of the main assembly via a cog. The main assembly consists of a servo motor, mounted in a pedestal on the larger of the two cogs. This servo moves a pointer arm in a direction desired by the user. Both of these motors are powered by code running on an Arduino platform.

Project Findings

The project succeeded in providing a hardware/software bases system of tracking satellites. However, development is needed to scrape locational data from the websites that provide real-time data on the location of satellites.
