Vortex — Movie & TV Show Database

To create a web application that combines the best features and elements of the current top Movie and TV database websites in one easy to use, user friendly place.

Project Description

Vortex is a web application designed to help users find information about movies or tv shows. Users can search and view information such as cast, trailers, genres, descriptions, release dates and other related or recommended movies or tv shows. Users can also login in using their email or with a third party website like Google or Facebook and add an item to one of their lists: favourites, watchlist or watched. The aim of the application was to the best features of the top movie and tv show database websites into one easy to use, user friendly application. There are also curated lists of popular, now playing, top rated and upcoming movies and tv shows for users to browse. The data is retrieved from the TMdB API and manipulated and displayed using the javascript framework VueJS. Users custom lists are stored using the real-time NoSQL database firebase. All elements are styled using the CSS framework UiKit.

Project Findings

During the process of creating our application we found that it takes more time than we had anticipated to implement the features we had planned. We also learnt about many different front-end frameworks and databases as well as their pros and cons. We also did research on the amount of media the average user consumes as well as the percentage of those users that would keep track of the media they want to watch.
