Recognising Female Tennis Players

A study was conducted to investigate the relationship between the physical attractiveness of tennis players, players’ tennis ranking and students’ level of interest in tennis on students’ ability to recognise female tennis players. The study aimed to highlight the importance placed on physical attractiveness in the media as the literature in the area supports that physically attractive players receive more coverage than some of the highest ranked players.

Project Description

The study investigated the relationship between the physical attractiveness of tennis players, players’ tennis ranking and students’ level of interest in tennis on students’ ability to recognise female tennis players. The study addressed the research question “Is there a relationship between the physical attractiveness of female tennis players, their ranking and students’ ability to recognise players?” Extensive research on physical attractiveness supports that physically attractive individuals receive many benefits due to their appearance, one being attracting more attention. Attention from the media in sport can be important for an athlete’s career. The current study suggested that due to the additional attention from the media, individuals would be able to recognise more players that are seen as physically attractive than players ranked inside the top 10 in tennis.

Project Findings

The results of the study showed that students were able to recognise female tennis players that were ranked inside the top 10 more than the tennis players ranked outside the top 10. Students that indicated a moderate interest in tennis were able to recognise more players than students with no interest in tennis. The results of the study indicated that the physical attractiveness of the tennis players was not significantly related to students’ ability to recognise them.
