Is féidir linn (Yes We can) An Irish language learning game for kids.

Learning a new language or trying to improve upon it can be difficult, which is why this project aims to research on how Gamification can be used to teach the Irish language. is féidir linn is an e-learning game that is used to motivate and enhance the user’s learning, speaking, and pronunciation of Irish words also known as (Gaeilge). The target audience for this game is between the age of 7 to 10 years old.

Project Description

Is féidir linn is an e-learning game available on the web to the target audience of 7 to 10 years of age. A gamified approach was taken to challenge the player and allowing them to enjoy learning. The game also scales accordingly to any screen size being used. The game consists of a login and register page, the page for new player’s, and once the player is logged in, their overall High score from playing the game is displayed. Players information such as first name last name, password and High score are all stored inside an MYSQL database. The game mainly focuses on two aspects pronunciation and spellings. Is féidir linn can be used in an educational environment to teach the Irish language or in the convenience of their home. The technologies used to implement this game are HTML5, CSS, PHP and JavaScript within the framework called Phaser. The main page for the game consists of different options such as lessons and instruction. The lessons page created is to assist players with items that are required for the gameplay, for e.g. colours in Irish, while the instruction page focuses on explaining to the user what controls can be used. The game also creates a competitive environment by creating leaderboard table to show the player’s position within the table. The game is an endless running platform game which allows the player to jump over obstacles. Various Irish words are displayed at the top of the screens which requires the player to jump on the correct item that equals the Irish word. The gameplay consists of score, obstacles, and lives. If the player happens to collide with an obstacle the player loses a life the main aim is to get the correct answer and staying alive.

Project Findings

The overall project was a success, being able to achieve a working game which enables the player to enjoy while learning the Irish language. From the testing acquired the game proved to be beneficial towards the target audience. Feedback gathered suggests on how different aspects can be improved upon which were then incorporated into the game. Improving the user’s experience is vital considering the target audience. Further feedback acquired from the users will be improved upon for future development of the game such as multiple levels with various environments and different lessons and character selection, to allow the player to choose a preferable character.
