ANPR Security System

Number plate recognition is common in many industries such as toll bridges and law enforcement. This project explores the use of ANPR technology for increased security in a domestic setting, using computer vision techniques.

Project Description

Vehicles of all type are heavily integrated into our lives. As a result, number plates and the various methods of recognising them has become increasingly important, as it’s the primary method of identifying vehicles. Nowadays, the first and foremost use of number plates is within police forces around the world. This project involved using this technology in a domestic setting, such as monitoring an average homeowner's driveway, to allow for the recognition of cars while the homeowner is away. By integrating the Department of Transport's (DTTAS) vehicle database, advanced monitoring could be carried out with an SMS notification system.

Project Findings

Using low-performance hardware, ANPR can easily be implemented with an abundance of computer vision libraries available in multiple languages. With the help of OpenCV, advanced image analysis can be carried out to recognise and process features such as license plates.
