Neo-Guitar

The aim of the Neo-Guitar project is to offer an alternate method of learning guitar scales for someone who is learning the instrument for the first time. The project provides a more interactive method of learning than traditional methods such as sheet music or tablature. The hope is that the project could be particularly appealing to younger people learning guitar or a tool for a teacher to use. User testing was performed and results between the Neo-Guitar and traditional methods were compared.

Project Description

Neo-Guitar is an interactive guitar tutor made using a Raspberry Pi and Neopixel LED strips. The project itself is an attempt at an alternate method of learning guitar scales, using LEDs as a more visual and interactive way of learning the scales that would be more appealing to a beginner on guitar than reading sheet music or tablature. Neo-Guitar acts as a mirror image to a real guitar and is used as a guide for a user to follow and play the correct notes in a guitar scale. LEDs change colour when a note is played correctly or flash red when a wrong note is played to advise the user if they are too flat or too sharp. When the scale is complete a congratulatory animation is played on the LED strips to inform the user that they have achieved the goal. A user has a choice of several scales to learn using the Neo-Guitar project.

Project Findings

User testing of the Neo-Guitar project was carried out with a variety of people with different skill levels in guitar, ranging from a complete beginner to expert. Generally, users found the Neo-Guitar project a more engaging way of learning the scales, particularly with the users who had no experience playing guitar before.
